The name “Home Plate” comes from Rod’s background as being a pretty good ballplayer in his youth, however an arm injury had him picking up a knife instead of a baseball bat, which led to his stellar career as one of Canada’s top professional chefs.

“Home Plate” also describes his food philosophy of creating dishes that feature fresh, local ingredients.
This is a real coup for the winery and also for it’s fantastic winemaker, Howard Soon.

We shot the latest podcast with Howard and during the filming he mentioned that this accolade was something that he really wanted to win. He’s been close in the past, but it proved elusive until now, which goes to prove that good things come to all those who wait (and work hard ... and make great wine, as Howard does.).

This latest podcast features Howard and Sandhill, as well as some great visuals of the Okanagan area, a wine growing region that supplies 95% of the province’s supply of wines.

I end up back in the kitchen after visiting Sandhill and use their No.2, from the small lots program, in my “Pasta with Venison Meatballs” dish.

It was fun getting out of the kitchen ... something we hope to do more of as we visit more producers down the road.
