This Feast will mark the 17th Feast of Fields that Chef Butters has attended and presented food – all in support of FarmFolk CityFolk. FarmFolk CityFolk is a not for profit society working to cultivate a local, sustainable food system. Our projects provide access to and protection of farmland; support local growers and producers; and engage communities in the celebration of local food.

Described as a wandering harvest festival, FarmFolk CityFolk’s Okanagan Feast of Fields is the culinary event of the summer season. With almost 60 restaurants, wineries, distilleries and breweries scattered over the property of our host farm, Meadow Vista Artisan Farm Winery in southeast Kelowna, guests are free to wander, taste, sip and enjoy the experience. This 7th annual Okanagan Feast of Fields, on Sunday, August 16th from 1 – 4 pm showcases the very best of the region and highlights the connections between farmer and chef, field to table and farm folks and city folks.
Our 2015 host farm, Meadow Vista is a modern artisan farm winery driven by passionate eco-foodies. Founded in 2009 by wellness and wine expert Judie Barta, Meadow Vista Honey Wines is Kelowna’s premier meadery and artisan farm, producing Canada’s first organic sparkling honey wine. Meadow Vista Artisan Farm Winery is located at 3975 June Springs Road in Kelowna.
This edition of Okanagan Feast of Fields marks the 20th feast that Chef Butters of RauDZ Regional Table has participated in with attendance at both the lower mainland and island Feast of Fields before moving to the Okanagan Valley. This year, RauDZ Regional Table/micro bar bites Executive Chef Brock Bowes and Butters are working together on a creative dish involving Old Meadows Farm Carrot ‘Hot Dog’ with rabbit pico de gallo paired with wine from Wild Goose Vineyards. Fellow downtown Kelowna eatery Salted Brick is serving up Bison Meat Pie paired with wine from the newest West Kelowna winery, The Hatch. The Okanagan Chefs Association is serving up two taste treats – Okanagan fruit infused chocolate lollipops and a pressed vegetable, goat cheese terrine with apricot chutney that pair perfectly with wines from Church & State. Chef de Montreuil from Bonfire Restaurant has raided his own impressive restaurant culinary garden for his dish to pair with wine from Sumac Ridge. Our host farm, Meadow Vista will be pouring a wine created for the occasion, Field White, a blend of honey and pinot gris as a refreshing note with the honey cured Char from the fishmonger team at Codfathers Seafood Market and The Table at Codfathers. You’ll be able to purchase a bottle of Field White at the Meadow Vista Wine Shop on the property during the event with a portion of the proceeds going directly to FarmFolk CityFolk.

Ensuring Seed Security – FarmFolk City Folk’s BC Seeds project began with Patrick Steiner of Stellar Seeds in Sorrento. Working with Patrick, we expanded our seed producers network building a database of BC’s organic seed producers, and writing a best practices and organic seed growing workbook for seed growers. More recently, we filmed a series of online seed saving videos at Sunshine Farm in Kelowna.
Helping Communities and Farmers – Supporting the existing and developing network of Community Farms, our Farm Program Manager, Heather Pritchard, has been working with a variety of farms in and around the Okanagan. Providing mentorship as they convert their farm to a community farm, thus removing the land from speculation, and providing training and housing for the next generation of farmers on their land.
Engaging the Community – Beginning in 2015 FarmFolk CityFolk launched a film series to encourage discussion on local food and agriculture.
Building a Local Food Economy – Since 2012 FarmFolk CityFolk has hosted Meet Your Maker (MYM), the Okanagan’s annual local food business networking event, helping small-scale, regional food businesses grow and generate sales.
Working with Young Farmers – In partnership with Young Agrarians FarmFolk CityFolk is supporting and encouraging newcomers to farming. Providing educational gatherings on a regular basis uniting new and young farmers to network, learn and discuss the challenges of modern day farming.
